Wide flat strips run horizontally in pale clay tones, broken by thin vertical joins where one length ends and the next begins. Slight darker bands and faint lengthwise streaks give each strip the look of pressed water hyacinth leaf. The scale is generous and the joins staggered like boarding, so across a wall it reads as calm horizontal planking for a residential living room.
Natural fibre, drawn rather than photographed. Abaca, jute, raffia and hemp are woven — warp over weft, with the slubs and butt joins the material cannot help having. Reed, arrowroot, bamboo and seagrass run one way only, as stalks laid side by side. Leaf is the wide flat strips of hyacinth and paper weave. Mineral is cork and mica. Real grasscloth has no repeat at all, so these are drawn long and irregular: at the recommended repeat the eye finds the fibre, not the join.
